In September 2014 we completed the installation and commissioning of a biomass boilers complete with a wood chip storage silo. The boiler has been sized to provide central heating to both the hostel and the adjacent property as well as providing near limitless hot water for various shower rooms and kitchens within the properties. Although more expensive to construct that a wood pellet boiler the woodchip unit is fuelled by wood chip produced by our neighbours on Alvie Estate. This helps to sustain the local economy and reduces the added energy to our fuel costs to the minimum. The woodchip is delivered in 16 cubic metre shipments by tractor and trailer. The installation has proved a great success ensure the hostel is always warm and welcoming year round.
